COLUMBIA TRISTAR has released the Gene Hackman/ Dan Aykroyd comedy,
“LOOSE CANNONS.” Originally released 13 years ago, it’s a film that was
curiously overlooked when James Lipton interviewed Hackman on “Inside the
Actor’s Studio.”
Hackman plays Mac, a cop whom has been given a new partner, Ellis(Dan Aykroyd),
suffering from extreme psychological problems. Aykroyd has always been good at
playing “bright” men with a gift for technical gab, and his character is the
same here, except for the fact that when under duress, he begins to take on the
personality of other celebrities. Funny? Not really. While trying to be an “Odd
Couple” type comedy, it tries to take its underlying crime investigation
seriously. They’ve uncovered a pornographic video with Adolph Hitler, and his
supporters are intent to prevent its release, by any means. This subplot doesn’t
ever really manifest into anything that can be regarded as suspenseful.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film’s 2.35:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9
enhancement. While a few scenes appear soft, the image is generally impressive,
with deep colors, and fine contrast. Fleshtones appear natural.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented a Dolby Digital Stereo mix. It’s not an
aggressive mix, however there are enough front separation effects to make it
pleasant.
