Former model turned actress Jamie King(Pearl Harbor, Bulletproof Monk) stars in the new COLUMBIA TRISTAR dvd release of “LONE STAR STATE OF MIND.” An independent film striving to be an adventurous “road” film, “LONE STAR STATE OF MIND” stars King as “Baby,” the girlfriend of Earl Crest, played by Joshua Jackson(CRUEL INTENTIONS, DAWSON’S CREEK). The couple’s plans to leave Texas and start a new life in Los Angeles, California, are turned upside down when Earl’ cousin steals from some bad guys who’ll stop at nothing to get it back. While this might suggest a poor man’s “TRUE ROMANCE,” it’s not anywhere near as creative or engaging. King and Jackson aren’t bad, but even with some good laughs, the script is pretty predictable.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film’s 2.35:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. A pan&scan version is also provided, but it’s extremely grainy, in addition to being severely cropped. Colors are solid, and there’s great clarity in almost every instance. Contrast is also quite good, with deep blacks and grays. In spite of the film’s modest budget, this is a surprisingly sharp transfer. Fleshtones appear natural.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. It too, is surprisingly aggressive. There is an abundance of surround/directional effects, giving the film a much bigger atmosphere than one would expect from an “idie” type film.
A few trailers are included.
