SRP $24.95 1.85:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 COLUMBIA TRISTAR

Billy Bob Thornton, is just one of many great actors in the new dvd release of “LEVITY” from COLUMBIA TRISTAR.  Thornton stars as a man released from prison, twenty-two years after murdering a young boy, working as a cashier, during a robbery that went awry. Whatever one feels about crime and punishment, it’s made clear that he does have remorse and doesn’t want to be let out from prison.  Still, he’s released, and is lost, until his encounters, some accidental, some intentional, alter his life and own self-value.  Morgan Freeman, Holly Hunter and Kirsten Dunst, all give memorable performances here.  Writer/director Ed Solomon deserves much praise for this work. “LEVITY” never panders, and it never sentimentalizes scenes that could have easily gone that route.  It still manages to stay with the viewer long after it’s ended, and it’s the kind of film that makes one want to recommend it to others.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film’s correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement.  It’s a great looking film, and this transfer is equally impressive.  It’s a nearly flawless image, with great color, and perfect contrast. Darker scenes offer excellent detail. Fleshtones appear natural.

The soundmix is extremely effective, without being aggressive. There are some great directional/panning moments, however, most effects are used to enhance the atmosphere and music. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has included a terrific featurette.  Although it’s only fifteen minutes long, it still offers some great insight and footage. A commentary with writer/director Solomon, the film’s producer and editior, is also included.  It offers a trough of information about the film. While some of it relates to themes, much of it is dry, and may be problematic for most audiences to sit through.
