"FOX LORBER", PLEASE START LABELING YOUR JACKET COVERS CORRECTLY!!!
"Love and Anarchy", a masterpiece from director Lina Wertmuller is
letterboxed with 1.66:1 aspect ratio, but no mention of it anywhere. This is no
small problem, as some FOX LORBER titles are not letterboxed, and this inconsistency will
cause problems with consumers looking for correctly rendered film classics which FOX
LORBER tends to release. Now, for the review: The transfer is
excellent!!! We also wish FOX LORBER would continue the same quality and standards
achieved with this release. To begin with, the menu is animated(no mention on jacket
cover) and while there's no 16:9 enhancement, subtitles are clearly visible in the 16:9
mode. The fleshtones are consistent, and while the colors design doesn't call for
extremely vivid colors, the picture is sharp. The digital monaural sound is fine,
but unremarkable.

Emmanuelle Beart has never looked better than she does in "L'Enfer".
This is no small feat, particularly because the transfer leaves room for
improvement. While it's not bad, it's a bit too grainy at times, and the subtitles
are not always sharp due to the general clarity and contrast of the picture in certain
scenes. We also had a horrible time trying to watch the included trailer, a defect
that didn't extend to the film has created a blurring/compression effect that we couldn't
correct. The digital mono sound is fine.

A great movie, "Diva" is a dissapointing transfer. The quality is
average at best. There's artifacts present in brief instances, but the film never
looks slick, which is what its production design cries out for! The monaural sound
is fine. A theatrical trailer is included.

Maggie Cheung, the Hong Kong action star of "Police Story" stars in this
visually hypnotic tale surrounding an attempt to remake the legendary silent serial,
"Les Vampires". Cheung arrives in France, unable to speak any french, and
this is but the first of many problems plaguing the production. The transfer looks
wonderful, with slick production values perfectly rendered with clarity and perfect
contrast. Even in 16:9 mode, subtitles are intact. The digital stereo sound
offers little in the way of directional effects, but adds to the power of musical
background.

The director of "Tampopo" brings forth another entertaining film with "A
Taxing Woman", the story of a tax inspector out to catch Tokyo's most elusive tax
cheat, after stumbling onto one of his bordellos. The witty cat&mouse maneuvers
of the two trying to outwit each other is complimented by their growing attraction.
The transfer looks fine, but we're disappointed that the box cover incorrectly
states the transfer as being letterboxed. It's full-frame, and although subtitles
are intact, they're lopped off in 16:9 mode, and apparently so is some picture
information. The digital mono sound is unremarkable.

"Erotique" is an anthology of four erotic short films with a distinct female
point-of-view. Four different directors are responsible for the segments as well,
and while their styles are quite different, their finished work is consistently
entertaining, and refreshing. The dvd transfer is excellent with vivid colors,
excellent contrast, and consistent fleshtones. The digital stereo sound adds greatly
to the film's impact.
