Paul Bettany stars as the Archangel Michael, in "LEGION." A badass angel, this "MICHAEL," is nothing like the angel Travolta made famous in his comedy. Instead, the "MICHAEL" of "LEGION" sports an arsenal of high-power submachine guns and more, all thrown into the trunk of a cop car he's taken on his run to a desolate diner, set as the showdown between the angels of an "angry god" and the varied occupants thrown together through apparent happenstance, for what may be the end of humanity. Borrowing from "TERMINATOR," "THE SEVENTH SIGN," and many other sci-fi/action films, "LEGION" isn't at all original and the script has numerous flaws of logic, even within its own supernatural setting, however, there are moments that seem inspired and the acting is often, surprisingly impressive. Dennis Quaid as the weary owner of the diner, hoping to make a difference, if not for him, then at least for his son, proves why he's one of the few "great" talents still working in Hollywood. Lucas Black,(SLINGBLADE) as his son, proves to be one of the few child actors capable of being just as impressive as an adult. Even Kate Walsh doesn't manage to ruin every scene she's in, although the scenery she chews is a different matter!
Special effects, tight pacing and some impressive cinematic touches, make for a fun viewing experience, ending at just the right spot, before things become overbearing and sluggish.
While the final fight sequence between two angels, Michael and Gabriel, feels more unintentionally funny than gripping, numerous action sequences work well and some of the plot elements even feel inspired. "LEGION" isn't as impressive as "PROPHECY," but it's one of the better action/sci-fi films of the past year.
SONY has provided the correct 2.40:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray. Although it often has intentionally dark scenes, color and detail is virtually flawless. The brighter exterior scenes showcase the level of depth capable with the high-depth format, providing some of the most impressive detail found on any blu-ray thus far. Colors, especially, contrasting with the desert location, are flawless in their richness. Even in the darkest scenes, detail is never swallowed by shadow, due to inky blacks. WOW! A great looking image!
SONY has provided a DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix as equally impressive as the image! "LEGION" boasts one of the most immersive, consistently enthralling mixes ever released on blu-ray. Bass, panning, directional effects, dialogue and music are perfectly balanced, making for a stellar "demonstration quality" soundmix!
While the picture-in-picture audio commentary is sure to please fans of the film, "FROM PIXELS TO PICTURE," is the best of the featurettes, focusing on the impressive special effects. Various trailers(1080p) are included.
