In the extremely violent and acrobatic film, “LEGEND OF THE SWORDMAN,” Jet Li is a young swordman traveling with others through the mountains in the hopes of leaving behind their violent past. There are various encounters along the journey, and a character known as Asia the Invincible, exploits Li’s penchant for drinking too much to his advantage. In between a convoluted storyline, almost every character flying around, and creative weaponry, the film’s buried message appears to be that “power corrupts.”
“LEGEND OF THE SWORDMAN” is a silly film that still manages to be entertaining. There’s not much to remember about the story, but the special effects, even in spite of wires showing, are amusing.
BUENA VISTA has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement for this transfer. The color values are solid, with rich colors and hues. The contrast is also quite sharp, allowing for good definition in darker scenes, which also allows the wires to be more evident as well.
BUENA VISTA has also presented a Dolby 2.0 Surround mix. Unfortunately, surrounds are virtually non-existent. There is little in the way of directional effects, and fidelity is limited. Dialogue is generally intelligible, but there are spots wherein it’s muffled. Only a poorly dubbed version is offered here.
There are several trailers included.
