Jackie Chan stars in "LEGEND OF THE DRUNKEN MASTER", just released
on dvd from BUENA VISTA HOME ENTERTAINMENT. For anyone not familiar with
Jackie Chan, this may very well be one of the best films for them to view first.
The stunts he and others perform here, rank up there with not only the best of
Chan's movies, but of "all" martial arts films in general.
The plot, having to do with Chan trying to rescues some Chinese artifacts that
have been stolen, is incidental to the action that ensues in almost every scene.
"Drunken" fighting refers to the sense of enhanced skills possessed by
fighters after heavy drinking. Because the story is so simplistic,
with
the heroes and bad guys painted with broad stokes, even younger children, 10 and
up, will probably enjoy the film without perceiving any bad messages. The
final fight scene is outstanding, and the outtakes are hilarious.
BUENA VISTA has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 16:9
enhancement for this release. While it's generally sharp, it's a little
too
soft in spots. Colors are vivid and bright. Fleshtones appear
natural
throughout.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is extremely active, with some highly
effective surround usage. The musical score is effective in suitably
engulfing the listener. Unfortunately, the original soundtrack isn't
included.
A brief interview with Jackie Chan is included as a supplement. While his
English is hard to decipher at times, he's likeable and his comments about
martial arts are interesting.
There are a number of trailers included here, including :Shanghia Noon,
Supercop 1&2, and others.
