James Clavell wrote, produced, and directed "THE LAST VALLEY", an
overlooked historical epic, set during the end of the "Thirty Years
War". Omar Sharif stars as an intelligent former teacher, forced into
poverty after his entire family is murdered. The film follows his
adventures as he comes face to face with cold-blooded mercenaries,
ruthlessly destroying one village after the next. When he finally finds
haven in a peaceful village, it's not long before the mercenaries seek
to destroy it, and Sharif must use all his cunning and strength to
prevent its destruction. The film has a real feel of authenticity to it
in terms of the era it depicts. The costumes, locations, and images all
blend together perfectly, creating a totally believable atmosphere.
Sharif is excellent in his role, bringing about real empathy for his
character. Michael Caine, Nigel Davenport, and others help round out a terrific
cast!
ANCHOR BAY has preserved the necessary 2.20:1 aspect ratio, but for some
reason, didn't choose to enhance it for 16:9 screens. The image is
typically first-rate, with fine color values, natural fleshtones, and minimal
grain. However, there are some scratches and other "age" spots
that lessen the overall image quality. The monaural sound is fine,
offering clear dialogue, and minimal distortion, even at high levels
during battle scenes.

"IMMORAL TALES" has been released by ANCHOR BAY. Praised by
"some" as an erotic masterpiece, this anthology mixes sex with
production design, in a manner that resembles an "X" rated Hammer
film, at times! Director Walerian Borowczyk creates some powerful
images as the stores unfold, sometimes effectively enhancing the effectiveness
of the plot. The best of the four tales, relates to the infamous Countess
Bathory and her penchant for sadistic orgies with naïve/poor village girls.
While there is real talent behind this film, at times, the stories do appear to
be simply excuses for excessive nudity and graphic violence.
ANCHOR BAY is presenting the film with its proper 1.66:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9
enhancement. The colors are solid, fleshtones appearing natural, and
contrast is near-perfect. There are no artifacts, and the depth of image
is extremely impressive, especially when considering the 26 year old film source
used for the transfer. The monaural sound is fine, while limited in
frequency and in terms of design. For the first time, the film is being
presented with its French soundtrack. Of course, sub-titles are available.
But, the English dubbed version is also available.

Before "The Exorcist" and "The French Connection", there
was "GOOD TIMES". Famed director William Friedkin is responsible
for this mess! Sonny and Cher, and believe it or not "George Sanders"
star in this comedy. The couple enlist the aid of Sanders as a film
producer/investor and their visits explain the various episodic
scenarios that ensue. While the film attempts to spoof various genres,
it fails in all of them. There is a nostalgic value to this film
however, and fans of Sonny and Cher will probably still find it worth
seeing.
ANCHOR BAY didn't offer this release with 16:9 enhancement, although the
1.85:1 aspect ratio is intact. The transfer still manages to look
terrific, with bright solid colors. The monaural sound is fine, though
limited in frequency range.
