Isabelle Huppert and Daniel Auteuil star as a couple dealing with infidelity in "La Separation." It's a brilliant film, and it deals with its subject matter as honestly and intelligently as Alan Parker did with "SHOOT THE MOON." Huppert admits to Auteuil that she is actually in love with another man, and the raw anger and hurt that are brought out by this revelation churns, swirls, runs amok, and causes everyone around to behave in ways that speak to the sheer power of love and the inevitable pain that comes with it when it's ended.
WELLSPRING has presented a generally impressive transfer for this release. The correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio is intact, without 16:9 enhancement. Colors are generally subdued, and while they play an important part in the film's design, the image is never dull. The resolution is fine, although contrast is inconsistent. Darker scenes lack the clarity associated with superior WELLSPRING releases. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.
The 2.0 Stereo sound offers no directional effects, however there is limited separation for music. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
