The sequel to the wonderful animated classic, "LADY AND THE TRAMP",
is now available on dvd from BUENA VISTA. While most
"made-for-video" sequels are mediocre at best, this one's actually
quite entertaining. In this one, Lady and Tramp have their own family,
consisting of three daughters girls and of course one adventurous son, Scamp.
After running away from his home with other dogs, led by "Chazz Palminteri,
he finds romance and adventure.
The romantic interest is another stray, voiced with enthusiasm by Alyssa
Milano. There are more than a few dangers lurking about, least of
which is the dog catcher, always "on their tail." The story
isn't too flexible in terms of originality, but it's still fun, and the
animation is really
impressive.
BUENA VISTA has presented this release with the proper 1.66:1 aspect ratio and
16:9 enhancement. This is a terrific looking transfer! There's
incredible detail here! Colors are extremely solid and as bright as they
are, there's no oversaturation!
BUENA VISTA has also offered the choice for audiences to select from either
Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1! While the soundmix isn't extremely
aggressive, it has its fair share of directional and surround effects. The
differences between the Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks are subtle, but, as is
typical, the "DTS" soundmix has a slightly better bass response.
"LADY AND THE TRAMP 2" is loaded with supplements. To begin
with, there's an audio commentary with Director Darrell Rooney and the
producer/co-director, as well as the director of animation. While
there are some segments wherein their comments tend to drag, they're generally
enthused about their work here, and the commentary differs from many other
animator commentary by focusing more on the character and story
development than on the dryer technical aspects of animation.
A featurette, "MAKING OF LADY AND THE TRAMP 2-TRAMP TO SCAMP" offers
some "behind-the-scenes" footage of the film's production. This
includes interviews with the film's animators, as well as some brief focus on
the people behind the voices of the characters.
Our favorite supplement has to be "PLUTO SHORTS". This segment
consists of three short cartoons featuring Pluto. 1) Pluto, Junior
2) Pluto's Kid Brother 3) Bone Trouble All of these
shorts are terrific and we hope that BUENA VISTA will release a dvd compiled
just of "Pluto" cartoons.
