Lady and the Duke-$29.99

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has released Director Eric Rohmer's newest film, "LADY AND THE
DUKE" on dvd.  There are some interesting things going on in this film, but it's
almost too "talky" for anyone!

Set during the French Revolution, the story is based on the true life of Grace
Elliott(the lady) and her past love(the "duke" of Orleans) as they end up on
opposite sides of the Revolution.

Their performances are fine, even compelling at times, but the film lacks even
the slightest bit of perpetual motion!  Any moments that involve any high-drama,
are merely "described" by the main characters as having taken place, but never
actually shown!  It's frustrating to see a film set during such dramatically
important events, and failing to show "any" of them.

One accomplishment, certain to win it some fans, is the film's visual style.
Rohmer uses computer technology to superimpose the actors into artificial
settings, ala paintings!  It's not a gritty, realistic look, but it's often
beautiful.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film's 1.77:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9
enhancement. The image appears soft at times, but overall, colors are bold, and
the fleshtones appear natural. Contrast is fine, and there's no grain evident
anywhere.

The Dolby Digital 5.0 mix features the original French soundtrack. There are no
surround moments, although the score is boosted in a few spots through all
speakers.  Dialogue is always well focused and free from distortion.
