This comedy classic has been a long time comin'!!!! Finally, it's here and boy
was it worth the wait. While originally intended to by released full frame only, MGM
has intelligently decided to offer both 2.35:1 and P&S versions. Our
preference,....2.35:1. While the image is sharp in both, there's definitely a
sharper edge to the widescreen image. The dolby digital 5.1 sound mix is excellent,
actually surpassing the range available on laserdisc on both dolby digital 5.1 and dts
formats! While those versions sounded decent, but undistinguishable, this one offers
a wider range of directional effects and the music sounds even better!!! This
version includes a few minutes of extra footage inserted back into their proper sequences.
These scenes are also noted within the chapter insert provided. Additionally,
there's audio commentary from the Brothers, and it's entertaining as well as mildly
educational in regards to filmmaking. The fleshtones are consistent, and the color
values are flawless. Great job!!!!

"Just the Ticket" bombed in the theaters, and while it probably deserved
better, it's nothing great. Still, MGM has gone all out for it in this lavish dvd
presentation. The image is incredibly sharp, enhanced further with a 16:9 anamorphic
transfer. Even during the dark confessional sequence, there's incredible contrast
present. The color values are also quite impressive, with accurate fleshtones
throughout the film. The dolby digital 5.1 sound offers a sound mix that provides
atmospheric directional effects. Also included for fans of the film,...audio
commentary, and the short film from which the film was expanded.

Certainly one of the greatest anti-war films ever made, Kubrick's "Paths of
Glory" is a film worthy of an collection. Kirk Douglas gives one of his best
performances as the man trying to save the lives of three soldiers on trial as scapegoats
for the irrational orders of higher-ups in WW1. The acting is sensational all
around, and the dvd transfer, while aged in a few spots, is generally crisp looking, with
excellent contrast.

"Killer's Kiss" is Kubrick's stunning gangster film about a boxer trying to
protect a dancer from her boss. Fans of "Raging Bull" will appreciate the
wonderful boxing choreography here. The acting is incredible, but as with all of
Kubrick's films, the camerawork tends to take center stage, with great results. The
dvd transfer perfectly compliments the various lighting schemes throughout the film
without any compromise in contrast. The mono sound is unremarkable.
