SRP $29.98 1.85:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 BUENA VISTA HOME VIDEO

The premise to "KEEPING THE FAITH" sounds pretty good on paper.  Two best friends become a rabbi and a priest when they get older. When a girl from their youth returns into their lives, grown up, and looking quite attractive in comparison to her tomboy days, things get complicated.  Ed Norton stars and directs "KEEPING THE FAITH" and he's perfect in his part as the priest.  Ben Stiller is also quite good, and makes for a terrific rabbi.  Jenna Elfman is horribly miscast though.  To begin with, it's hard to believe the two men wouldn't be more attracted to each other before her!

Almost everything in the film that doesn't feature Elfman, is terrific.   The early scenes in the film, prior to Elfman's return, are particularly entertaining, and some of them are "laugh-out-loud" funny!  It's too bad that the writer didn't think of some other devise to utilize in order to keep the two most interesting characters involved without Elfman.

The transfer from BUENA VISTA HOME VIDEO is excellent.  The 1.85:1 ratio has been enhanced for 16:9 viewing.  The image is in pristine shape, without "any" grain at all!  The colors are solid, and while the picture is soft in a few spots, there is generally great detail.

The dolby digital 5.1 sound mix isn't extremely active, but the surrounds come into play with directional effects for atmosphere in some key moments.  The music "does" make the most of the surround mix, however, and it's wonderful.  Elmer Bernstein's score, along with the outstanding song selection, are certain to make viewers interested in purchasing the soundtrack alone.

There's a running audio commentary featuring Ed Norton and screenwriter/producer Stuart Blumberg.  Their conversation is lively, funny, and insightful.  They both have known each other for quite a while, making the commentary more pleasant and relaxed.  Unfortunately, some listeners may find it too relaxed, as it's not as engaging as most commentaries.

There is also a deleted scenes segment featuring "ten" scenes with commentary.  Most of these scenes are dreadful, and would have made a film that's too long, even longer.  There is one scene though that should have been left in, as it's hilarious!  A reel of outtakes is also included.  Unfortunately, BUENA VISTA didn't elect to provide an isolated music track!
