Sam Jones of "FLASH GORDON" fame, stars in another comedy/adventure based on a popular comic-strip, "JANE ." Set in the 1940s, the comic strip offered storylines wherein Nazis were routinely defeated by the British during wild adventures. Even the beautiful heroine, "Jane" would routinely outsmart them, although often unintentionally.
Britain finds out about a lost city where gigantic diamonds exist. Unfortunately, the Nazis know about the city as well, and Nazi henchwoman Lola Pagola(Maud Adams) devises a plan to prevent the British from obtaining these riches, and thereby changing the potential outcome of war. "Jane" and her assistants are continually ambushed but survive, and segments don't really move the plot along, so much as they offer reasons for her to be seen with less and less clothing. In truth, Kirsten Hughes is extremely sexy, but that's not enough to make viewers forget the lack of plot. The film's entirely predictable, but still manages to entertain with some campy humor that makes it better than it probably deserves to be.
There are some really funny lines here, but the Terry Marcel's direction and the film's low budget don't allow for the film to have the kind of campy atmosphere it needs.
In spite of some grain, the image to this ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT release is extremely well-polished. Colors are solid and vibrant, without oversaturation. There's great depth in almost every scene. Unfortunately, this also highlights the film's low budget scenery as well. The contrast is fine, with deep blacks and grays. Fleshtones appear natural throughout. The film's correct 1.66:1 aspect ratio is intact, with 16:9 enhancement.
A Dolby 2.0 surround mix is presented. It's not aggressive, but there are some ambient effects and dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
