"JACKASS," as the title alone, suggests, isn't for everyone. However, those who love the tv series, will love the film. And, for those with a broad enough sense of humor and a tolerance for the profane, there's plenty of great laughs, albeit painful ones, here!
The film is comprised of one ridiculous stunt after another, and most of them require a tolerance or affinity for great pain and/or lewdness.
The film is basically what the tv show would be without any censorship, and some of the stunts are of a more grand scale.
While some of the stunts, including "FIREWORKS WAKE-UP" are just crude, others such as "DEPARTMENT STORE BOXING," and ""RIOT CONTROL TEST," have a primitive but undeniable comic brilliance to them. Nothing about this film is "politically correct," but, the fact that people have always laughed at others in uncomfortable positions is well known. In "Jackass," at least we're not laughing at innocent bystanders that trip and fall, but rather at idiots intentionally putting themselves in precarious positions.
In addition to the regulars from the show, skateboard star Tony Hawk and rock musician Henry Rollins are also on board.
PARAMOUNT has preserved the film's correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. However, as with the tv show, many of the stunts have been captured "on-the-fly" with hand-held cameras of differing formats, so the quality of footage varies from one scene to the next. Some of the footage is quite sharp, however, and colors are generally solid. One isn't going to find or expect great detail.
PARAMOUNT has included a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. Because it's comprised of different source materials, it's not an aggressive mix. However, the musical score is terrific and the 5.1 mix boosts some great tunes from The Ramones and others with a surprising amount of bass. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
PARAMOUNT has provided two commentary tracks for this release. The first one features Johnny Knoxville, the film's director and (believe it or not) director of cinematography. While this collective crew provide quite a few laughs, they also offer insight behind many of the stunts. A 2nd commentary, featuring the cast, is less entertaining, and even, at times, annoying..
"MAKING OF JACKASS: THE MOVIE," is a featurette, filled with uncensored material, and is quite funny. A segment offering some hilarious outtakes, is also included.
PARAMOUNT has included a sizeable amount of extra footage for this release. Although some of it basically extends some already included footage, much is brand new, and fall-down funny!!!
PARAMOUNT has also included two music videos and the film's theatrical trailer.
