Director Nagisa Oshima's "In the Realm of the Senses" was extremely controversial during its initial release, particularly for one scene, which involves oral sex.  While on the surface, it may seem exploitative, it actually deals with vast social issues, and under Oshima's careful direction, sex is seen as much more than just an act.  The girl in this film uses sex as a tool, and it ends up taking over her life, as much as it does the master she's determined to build a relationship with, by using it.  While some considered this film pornographic, it perfectly demonstrates the term can be used too loosely. It's a masterpiece!

WELLSPRING has released this title with a full-frame ratio.  A few scenes appear to be tighter than they would've been if letterboxed, but this is a sharp transfer. Colors are solid, and contrast is fine.  Blacks and grays are defined, allowing for clarity in darker scenes.  . 

The dolby digital monaural sound is unremarkable, but free of distortion. Dialogue is always intelligible.
