One of the year’s most pleasant surprises, “INNOCENCE” has been released by COLUMBIA TRISTAR. It’s hard to think of another recent film that so eloquently examines the joys, sorrows, and anguish of first love, as well as “INNOCENCE” does.
There are plenty of films dealing with infidelity and the laws of attraction, but few have any sense of realism to them. Director Paul Cox has crafted a film that is memorable long after it’s over, and while painfully realistic, it also has its moments of optimism. “INNOCENCE” handles the issues of love and relationships in a mature way. It certainly helps separate this film from the typical teenage love story, by having its main players into their late 60s. Claire is an older woman in a marriage absent of love. She’s committed to her husband, even though he cheated on her years earlier. While there’s no warmth in her marriage, Claire has adapted to it by nurturing it in her relationship with her son, as well as with her hobby of gardening. When a man from Claire’s past, Charles, writes her asking to meet and recall old times, the stage is set for a rekindling of love that had never died.
Both of these characters are truly decent people, making it easy to care for them, and their situation. It’s evident from the moment they first see one another, they’re still “in love.”
“INNOCENCE” demonstrates that love truly has no bounds. The ramifications of it have just as much impact on geriatrics as teens. While this may sound obvious, the fact still remains that it’s seldom explored in films.
“INNOCENCE” is a great film and we can’t recommend it enough!
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented the film with its correct 1.85:1 ratio and 16:9 enhancement. It’s a wonderful transfer. While there is some grain, it appears intentional for flashback sequences. Otherwise, colors are rich, and contrast is flawless.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix for this release. While it’s not aggressive by any means, there are some ambient effects, and the musical score is complimented through all speakers. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
The theatrical trailer as well as ones for two other films, are included.
