INDIAN IN THE CUPBOARD

While Spielberg’s direction definitely went a long way in making “E.T.” an outstanding film, one can’t overlook the incredible script by Melissa(Mrs. Harrison Ford)Mathison.   Mathison also wrote the script for “INDIAN IN THE CUPBOARD”, the wonderful family film, recently released on dvd from COLUMBIA TRISTAR.

Based on a popular novel, “INDIAN IN THE CUPBOARD” is the tale of a young boy whom finds more adventure than he imagined after opening a special cupboard wherein he’s stored an American “Indian” figurine.   When this figurine comes to life, the boy begins to embark on his own adventure, as well as learn some important things about responsibility along the way.  Director Frank Oz provides a fine pace for the film, and while he’s proven his ability to capture a child’s imagination, as he’s done with various “Muppet” films, he’s never been more on the mark, than he is here!

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented the film with its proper 1.85:1 aspect ratio and 16:9 enhancement.  The transfer looks great.  Colors are extremely solid and often vibrant.  There’s great definition in every scene.  The contrast is also impressive with deep blacks and grays.  While there’s some grain, it’s not excessive and the overall quality of the transfer is so good, that it more than compensates for minimal imperfections.  While the full-screen version is also included, it’s horrible in comparison, appearing to have been simply cropped, and lacking the definition of the wide-screen version.

The Dolby 2.0 soundmix is more aggressive than we’d expected!  Directional effects may seem overprocessed at times, but the surrounds are used virtually throughout the entire film.  The film’s soundtrack is outstanding and is well presented here as well.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided a running commentary with Director Frank Oz.  Oz provides an insightful commentary, filled with exactly the kind of info any film fan wants to hear.  There’s plenty of production information, but also plenty of insight as to creative choices and behind-the-scenes tidbits as well!  It’s never dull.

There are various trailers included as well.
