"IF LUCY FELL" is the kind of film that a viewer either likes or hates! No one could say it's even very good. But, this reviewer will accept the possibility of someone "liking" it. If they do, it's probably because like the main male character in the film, played by writer/director Eric Schaeffer, they too fantasize about the possibility of not only having the girl of their dreams, but of also having Elle Macpherson after them as well!
It's to Schaeffer's credit that he was lucky enough to sell this script. It's preposterous on every imaginable level! In it, two "20-somethings" have made a pact that if they don't find a suitable partner by the time they turn 30, it's the end! Literally! Suicide! Sound like pretty stable, intriguing people to you? To make the film even more ridiculous, Schaeffer's character becomes enchanted with Elle Macpherson. That's not the ridiculous part! The ridiculous part is that Macpherson's character becomes "intrigued" with Schaeffer!!! And, when he has the chance to become romantic with her, he chokes! It's annoying because Schaeffer wants the viewer to accept that "his" character could've had something like this happen, and for him to be smug enough to "say no." His character is unlikable in every manner! It's just not believable at all!
Adding to the constant disbelief of one scene after another, is the use of a ballad, "IF LUCY FELL" following numerous scenes as some form of bridging device. It only succeeds in making the viewer dread the next scene!
COLUMBIA TRISTAR deserves credit for giving even their "bad" films fine transfers! The film is presented with the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio and 16:9 enhancement. Fleshtones appear natural throughout the film. Color values are solid. There's great clarity in every scene, and Ms. Macpherson's complexion can be defined as perfect, given the incredible resolution this dvd offers and the tight close-ups she faces in various scenes. There's some grain present, however, this appeared on the laserdisc version as well, and isn't related to the actual transfer.
The Dolby Surround soundmix is mostly restrained. There are some directional effects, but most surround effects are utilized for musical enhancement, specifically that annoying song!!! The dialogue is well focused and free of distortion.
