Hunter

While it’s easy to understand how an action/drama based on the real life exploits of a modern day bounty hunter, could appeal to Steve McQueen in his later years, perhaps as a sort of swan song.  However, there are so many problems with the film, beginning with the script, that one wonders how McQueen could have been unaware how many things were wrong with the film, and not demanded changes, before its release!

A film about a bounty hunter chasing down dangerous bail-jumpers requires action!  There’s virtually none here!  Whenever there is a chase scene, there’s no “Great Escape” here!  These potential action scenes play as if the director was yelling, “Slower, slower” on the set!  Everything about the film feels sluggish!  McQueen gives a fine performance here, and one can’t help but feel for him as he tries to rise above the material, but more for embarrassment than anything else!

PARAMOUNT has preserved the film’s 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement.  The image is extremely sharp, with minimal grain.  Color values are solid.  While they’re never especially vibrant, they never appear muted either.  Fleshtones appear natural throughout. Contrast is fine, with deep blacks and grays.

The film’s original monaural track is presented.  While fidelity range is limited, the dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.

The original theatrical trailer is included.
