SRP$ 2.35:1 Dolby 2.0 Surround BUENA VISTA

While Gina Lollobrigida is sensational looking as Esmerelda, there's little else to appreciate in this adaptation.  The Victor Hugo classic has been made many times, but its never felt as "plain" as it does here!  This is even more disappointing when taking into account the lavish production design and "epic" trappings of the tale itself.  Quinn isn't bad as Quasimodo, but Director Jean Dellanoy moves the film along at a slow pace, and there's never enough warmth to the film to allow the viewer to feel the heartache required of any Hugo story.  Unlike the other versions, this one brings so many "sub-plots" and characters that never serve any purpose, it ultimately confuses the viewer.

For some reason, BUENA VISTA didn't opt to offer the 2.35:1 image with 16:9 enhancement.  The image is inconsistent in tone throughout.  The image offers far less in detail than most BUENA VISTA releases, and there's a fair amount of grain present as well. Color values could be stronger, seeming dull in many spots.  Contrast is fine, although blacks and grays aren't discernible in darker scenes.

While the soundmix features Dolby 2.0 surround, there's nothing in the way of rear speaker effects.  The dialogue is intelligible and free from distortion, but the fidelity is limited, most noticeably during musical passages.
