COLUMBIA TRISTAR is releasing Harrison Ford’s latest, “HOMICIDE COP” on
dvd. Ford stars as Joe Gavilan, a detective in the Hollywood
Homicide division, recently paired up with a young partner, aspiring to be an
actor, K.C. Calden(Josh Hartnett). When K.C. isn’t being a cop, or
trying to be an actor, he’s sleeping with the pretty girls he teaches yoga to.
Director/Writer Ron Shelton tries to give depth to his characters by touching on
their personal struggles, which in itself isn’t bad, but for various reasons in
“HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE” it only succeeds in making an uneven film more uneven. The
film’s violent opening, in which hit-men murder a rap group while onstage,
performing, suggests the film’s going to be a tense
thriller/drama. However, as the story progresses, we’re made to learn
about Calden’s aspirations to get the home he’s spent a lot of his time and
earnings, working on, finally sold for a good price. We also find an Internal
Affairs investigation is going on due to his use of a Madame as an
informant. As Gavilan takes on the Internal Affairs division, the ups and
downs of real estate, and a murder investigation, he finds some solace in the
arms of girlfriend Lena Olin(always attractive) as a radio psychic.
It’s amazing that Shelton obviously tried to make this a multi-layer film,
and its results are still rather one-dimensional. There are plenty of
humorous scenes, but they never seem to blend with the overall story at hand.
Still, there are enough worthwhile moments to satisfy most
Ford fans, and while it’s typically a one-note comedy/drama, it’s generally
entertaining.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film’s 2.35:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. It’s a great transfer! Colors are dead on accurate, and often vibrant. There’s terrific detail and contrast is flawless. Fleshtones appear natural.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. It’s
extremely aggressive, boosting an equally energetic score, and numerous
directional/panning effects. The action sequences as well as the hip-hop
score, also makes great use of bass. Subwoofers will come to life for this
film. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided an audio commentary with Shelton. While he offers more insight into the film’s themes and overall production accomplishments, it’s still pretty dry as far as commentaries go.
Several trailers for other films are included.
