HIGHLANDER 4: ENDGAME
BUENA VISTA has released the newest entry in the "HIGHLANDER" series.
"HIGHLANDER 4: ENDGAME" deserves some credit for making parts 2&3
look good!
While the first film, "HIGHLANDER" actually succeeded as
entertainment, creating its own unique atmosphere and offering an energetic
pacing that made it stand out on its own, none of the sequels were as creative.
"HIGHLANDER 2" was reedited by director Mulcahey, whom managed
to improve upon its original theatrical version. Still, it was hard to
follow and unnecessarily silly. Highlander 3 was the worst of the bunch,
...until now!
The plot to the new film is ridiculous on many levels! Connor has
retired to "Sanctuary", a haven not dissimilar to "The
Colony" where Van Damme hid out in a previous film. It's where
immortals solace after their years of killing. After a new villain invades
the sanctuary and
kills everyone in it, Duncan begins to experience visions of what
occurred there.
Many more sub-plots are offered, and in truth, most of the questions
left from the other films are creatively answered here, thanks to writer
Joel(Dracula 2000). But, there are still enough unanswered questions to
threaten the audience with the potential of yet another sequel!
While the first two Highlander films suffered from horrible transfers
via Republic, "HIGHLANDER:ENDGAME" looks far superior to them.
BUENA VISTA has offered the film in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 16:9
enhancement. The colors aren't as vibrant as they are on many fine BUENA
VISTA releases, but generally the image looks sharp and defined.
Grain is minimal and there are no artifacts. Fleshtones appear natural
throughout. Since this is mostly an action film, it's great to find that
the DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 soundmix is pretty aggressive! Surround and LFE
channels are used to great effect in many sequences. The music is
successful in engulfing the listener in crucial moments for maximum effect!
BUENA VISTA will please fans with the extensive supplements offered here!
The audio commentary with the film's producers and film editor captures pretty
much any and everything possible related to the film as well as the series.
They also discuss their involvement on the
restoration of various scenes for the dvd release.
"VISUAL EFFECTS:A HISTORICAL PROGRESSION" explores the special effects
created for the film with its editors and special effects supervisor.
It offers detailed examples of how specific effects were achieved, and
while it isn't breathtaking, it succeeds in keeping the viewer's
attention.
The "DELETED SCENES" section offers the option of a commentary, but
it's completely unnecessary in determining why they were cut. They're
awful!
The 2nd disc of this 2 disc set offers "HIGHLANDER 4:ENDGAME" in its
original full-length cut! Unfortunately, the image is horrible in
comparison to the theatrical version. To begin with, the time code can
be seen continuously throughout the film, preventing the viewer from
ever having the chance to "take in" the actual film!
Furthermore, it's
a "rough cut" with unfinished effects, diminishing the power to many
scenes and their expected payoff!
Another supplement, "BEHIND THE SCENES FEATURETTE" offers a large
amount of set footage as well as interviews with the film's stars. It also
offers its information in separate segments. It's a fun featurette,
offering bloopers and much more!
