SRP $29.95 1.85:1(16:9) Dolby Digital 5.1 BUENA VISTA

Director Mel Smith was previously responsible for the little seen "Bean" film, but now his latest film has a chance to win over the audience it richly deserves, with "HIGH HEELS AND LOW LIFES".

When two best friends, bored with their lives and lack of career growth overhear some "low life" thieves on a radio scanner, they decide to take a chance and blackmail the crooks for a share of the loot.

Although the premise has its appeal, the chemistry between the two stars is what makes the film so worthwhile.  This is the film "Thelma and Louise" should have been!  Smoothly weaving between comedy and suspense, nothing about the film seems forced like the other film did.  The acting is great, and Smith moves the film along at a nice pace, without ever losing sense of the narrative.

BUENA VISTA has preserved the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement.  The picture is sharp, with strong color values, but the film does get a little grainy in darker scenes.  Fleshtones appear natural.

The dolby digital 5.1 mix is pleasant, and while the full imaging is generally reserved for the music, there are some great moments wherein the directional/surround effects are creatively used. Dialogue is intelligible and free from distortion, however there are moments where it's almost drowned out by the film's score. There are also some key scenes utilizing bass and LFE effects.

A featurette is included, offering interviews with cast and crew, as well as "behind-the-scenes" footage.

Director Mel Smith provides a running commentary with writer Kim Fuller.  Both provide a nice rapport and insight into the thematic structure of the film, but probably offer less production information than fans of these types of commentary might expect.
