SRP$19.98 1.85:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT

A truly, "dark" comedy, "HEATHERS" has been remastered as a "THX" presentation from ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT.  Winona Ryder stars as Veronica, the new girl in a private school environment, run by rapist jocks and a clique of girls, who brought together by their cruelty, beauty and name.

The clique at first gravitate towards Veronica, hoping to control her, but she's more independent than they realize, and after refusing to sleep with a college boy at the request of one of the "Heathers" she's been marked for school and social embarrassment.  Veronica is conveniently saved from ridicule when the blackmailing "Heather" is killed by a poisoned drink. With the help of a new rebel at school, JD(Christian Slater) the two mask her death as a suicide.  Soon enough, however, there are more deaths for Veronica to contend with, and JD may not be the right "wrong" guy for her after all.

It's a witty film, and the script by Daniel Waters is exceptional. It also helps to have a great cast, and "HEATHERS" has a terrific one, including the perfectly cast, and never-having looked better, Shannon Doherty.

ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for this release, with 16:9 enhancement and THX authoring.  While the previously available dvd release was fine, the colors are more stable and vibrant here.  Sharpness is improved as well, offering better definition in almost every scene.  The contrast is good, offering deep blacks and grays, boosting the definition in some key moments.  Fleshtones appear natural throughout.

ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT has presented a new Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, created by CHACE DIGITAL STEREO, a company responsible for previous ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT remasterings, as well as some important laserdiscs.  It's still not an aggressive soundmix, but the score is effective, and complimented through all speakers.  There are a few ambient effects, but most directional effects are delegated to the front soundstage. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.

Director Michael Lehmann, producer Denise De Novi and writer Daniel Waters offer a terrific running commentary for this release.  They provide plenty of stories, recounting the film's production, as well as the film's themes and information about the cast, which are quite entertaining. It's never dull and the three display real enthusiasm throughout. They're also honest, explaining what they'd do different in retrospect.

A new documentary, "SWATCH DOGS AND DIET COKE HEADS," is also offered, providing great interviews with the cast and crew.  It's just too bad, that at 30 minutes, it still feels too short.

The film's "never-shot" original ending is provided in script format.

ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT has also provided cast bios, the film trailer and a THX test.
