There can be little argument that Michael Caine is one of the best actors working today. He's one of those special actors, whom, just like Meryl Streep, can impact any scene they're in without anything more than a facial gesture. They run rings around the "celebrity" actors of today! For this reason, in large part, "HARRY BROWN" is the kind of film, which in spite of some real flaws, is still worth seeking out, and adding to one's blu-ray collection.

Caine plays the title character, with remarkable restraint. Harry, a retired marine and widower, lives a somber existence within the bleak setting of a London apartment community, besieged by drug activity and the criminals it attracts. Harry's only moments of complacency appear to be with the ritual of meeting his only good friend, Leonard at a local bar each day. Leonard has begun to point out his frustration with the increasing violence of his neighborhood and unwillingness to tolerate it any more. When Leonard is killed, Harry sets off with a vengeance, to rid the area of the scum that has infected it and achieve some form of respect for his lost friend. Of course, violence begets violence, and the police are looking for the new vigilante, and it's not long before things spiral out of control for everyone involved.

What could've easily become a modern "DEATH WISH," is far better. Aided not only by Caine, but the supporting cast and tight direction. Emily Mortimer as an investigating officer, eventually suspecting Harry, is terrific, but then so is everyone here!  The film is extremely dark, not only in feel but in its look as well. At times, it can verge on being overwhelming and this adds in making the violence appear more graphic than it actually is. The narrative almost becomes stalled a little more than half-way in, but, ultimately, "HARRY BROWN" is a gripping, well-made film.

SONY has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray. As mentioned, "HARRY BROWN" is extremely dark. So, the inky blacks offered make for a spectacular presentation! While colors are intentionally subdued, the image is always impressive. Detail is consistently staggering! "HARRY BROWN" is easily one of the most impressive looking blu-ray releases of the year!

SONY has provided a DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix.  Adding to the intense nature of the story, the mix impressively blends ambient effects with deep bass, and panning/discrete effects. Alternating between quieter and aggressive moments, the mix showcases the potential of a great lossy mix in a manner making this a reference quality release.

A commentary with the director, producer and "Caine" is worthwhile. It's insightful, occasionally humorous, and never dull. Deleted scenes are offered in 1080p, as are various trailers!
