A terrific animated film for the whole family, “THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE,” is now available from BUENA VISTA HOME ENTERTAINMENT and should be added to everyone’s dvd collection.

Any animated film wherein the villain is voiced by Vincent Price should be tempting enough, but add to it incredible background design, terrific depth, and a “Sherlock Holmes” influence, and a great movie is born!  Set in London, an adorable mouse’s dad is kidnapped by evil mastermind Ratigan.(Price)  Soon enough, she’s resuced from the streets by someone similar to “Watson” and “The Great Mouse Detective” decides to help the mouse find her father. While the animation isn’t in the same league as “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST” or “LION KING,” it’s still attractive.  The story is fresh enough and interesting enough to keep young and old alike, thoroughly entertained. 

BUENA VISTA HOME ENTERTAINMENT has presented “THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE” with the proper 1.66:1 aspect ratio and 16:9 enhancement.  It’s a generally slick looking image.  The London fog atmosphere tends to offer a subdued color look, but it’s effective and with decent resolution.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is virtually monaural, with no directional effects, and sound focused on the center channel.  Surrounds are utilized slightly to boost musical sequences. 
BUENA VISTA HOME ENTERTAINMENT has added some extras to this release.  A mini-documentary, sing-along song and two animated cartoons are available from the main menu.
