Greatest Story Ever Told-
While George Stevens is probably best known for "SHANE", "THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD" was probably his most personal project, and in spite of its failings, it's a spectacular film in many aspects.  "TGSET" attempts to depict the entire story of Christ.  It has an epic feel to it, and the all-star cast, attests to the studio's investment in the project.  Charlton Heston, John Wayne, Sal Mineo, are just a few of the "big" names featured in this film.  Making his film debut, Max Von Sydow, portrays Jesus.   His portrayal was unfairly criticized, and viewers can judge for themselves.
Without exception, this is the most honorable, compassionate "Jesus"
presented on film so far.  While there are the typical liberties taken with
any biblical tale for "enhanced" dramatic affect, none of it could be
considered blasphemous, just corny.  George Stevens was certainly one of American Cinema's greatest directors, and "THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD" ranks up there as one of if not the best of the biblical epics.
MGM has provided a nearly "flawless" transfer for this presentation!  While there are some signs of the film's age(scratches, etc)this is a generally slick looking transfer. The film's original aspect ratio is intact, and the rare 65mm Hi-definition image is stunning!  The color values are solid, fleshtones are always natural and there's great detail!
The soundtrack has been remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.  While we're a little disappointed that there aren't any "surround" effects, the
wonderful musical score by Alfred Newman manages to engulf the viewer in select segments.  The dialogue is entirely focused on the center channel.
MGM is offering some great supplements as well!  A short, but effective documentary, "WALKING IN BEAUTY", focuses on George Stevens' passion for this project.  In addition to various interviews, there is plenty of "behind-the-scenes" footage, certain to please film fans.  There's also a great "deleted" scene that's included here!  It involves Judas immediately prior to Christs' crucifixion. While it's very similar to the finished scene in the film, we liked it even more.  It's offered here in widescreen, though not anamorphic, and in stereo.  Unfortunately, the image is really rough, filled with scratches and other signs of its age.  Add a photo gallery with tons of "behind-the-scenes" shots, costume design sketches and more!  There's also another "short" documentary about the film's production and the film's original theatrical trailer.  All this for an incredibly low SRP of $24.95!  This is a must-have for any dvd collection!!!
