MGM has released "Gone With The Wind" on DVD with picture quality that surpasses any of the previous laserdisc versions by leaps and bounds. The detail and contrast levels are in flawless condition! This is one of, if not the best looking DVD transfers we've seen all year. There is, however, one slight disappointment. Even though the 1.33:1 theatrical ratio is basically intact, during some of the episode markings, some of the picture is absolutely off screen to the right. We're not sure if this is due to cropping from the original print over almost 60 years. The soundtrack has been offered with a remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack as well as the original Monophonic soundtrack. The Monophonic track sounds excellent in quality, however the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack provides atmospheric advantages during certain scenes, e.g. a rainstorm in which rain can be heard in rear speakers, and the musical score is boosted as well. The film is split over two sides, and the film's original intermission offers a suitable break for side switch.
