Probably the best animated television series, after "THE SIMPSONS," is "FUTURAMA." The show's main character is a pizza delivery guy inadvertently frozen in time for a thousand years. When he's awakened, he's got the exact same personality problems from before, only now he's got plenty of futuristic characters and settings to react with. As with "THE SIMPSONS," "FUTURAMA" offers extremely witty dialogue, scenarios, and more than a few satirical takes on Hollywood films. The characters, including an obnoxious robot, are all individually memorable, and it's actually easy to empathize with some of them. This is a series that only gets better with each season, and we're looking forward to FOX continuing to release follow-up seasons.
FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has preserved the show's 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Colors are excellent. None of the problems of "THE SIMPSONS FIRST SEASON" are visible here. The image is always well-polished and there are no problems with contrast. Blacks are extremely deep, offering impeccable detail in every instance.
FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has also provided a DOLBY SURROUND MIX. It's not overly aggressive, but offers its share of surround moments. The front soundstage provides a variety of separation effects in every episode. The dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
Fox Home Entertainment has presented the entire first season's 13 episodes in "FUTURAMA: VOLUME ONE," a three disc boxed set. It's actually a unique looking presentation, with each disc in its own casing. Each episode runs about 22 minutes, and offers fans an option to hear commentary from a wide range of contributors, including Matt Groening, voice talents, and more. There are plenty of extras as well, including stills, a featurette, storyboards and more.
Perhaps the best supplement is a "deleted scenes" segment. None of
these deleted scenes were excised due to content, as they're hilarious, but
rather due to running time problems.
