Having been a fan of the original 1985 "FRIGHT NIGHT," this reviewer was not too optimistic that yet another "remake" of a past favorite would be any good. However, the fact that Colin Farrell was attached to it, assuming the role of the main vampire, provided some hope. In spite of mixed films, Farrell has been genuinely attracted to daring and worthwhile projects.

While still not a big Anton Yelchin fan, he does a decent job as Charley Brewster, the high-school kid living with his single mom(Tea Leoni), in a sort of pre-fab neighborhood in the outskirts of Vegas. The story's location change to Vegas is actually a great choice, as it's a location wherein plenty of people are up all night and sleeping all day. So, who could suspect anyone with that habit of being a vampire. Well, when students begin becoming permanently tardy, Charley's friend, Ed begins to investigate. Charley, at first, blows off his friend's pleas to join him. Being a good student, trying to keep his pretty girlfriend interested, and mom happy, take enough of his time, but when Ed goes missing, Charley starts to consider Ed may have been on to something.

While the main plotline from the original film is intact, there are some clever, enhanced changes in this remake. The direction is tight, and there are some genuinely chilling, nail-biting, sequences. The entire cast compliments a well-crafted script, and Colin Farrell is absolutely terrific here! Christopher Mintz-Plasse(SUPERBAD)also does a memorable job as Ed, and these two particularly steal any scene they're in.

While the alliance between Charley and Vampire Expert, Peter Vincent, isn't as enjoyable as the chemistry between William Ragsdale and Roddy McDowall in the original roles, it's still mildly entertaining.

Overall, "FRIGHT NIGHT" moves at a fast pace, and with enough thrills to offer an extremely entertaining experience and one that hasn't lost its "fun" factor with 3 subsequent viewings as of now!

DISNEY/BUENA VISTA has provided the correct 1.78:1 aspect ratio for this MPEG-4 MVC 1080p release. The film has been released on blu-ray 3d, complete with a 2d blu-ray, dvd and digital copy.

The blu-ray 3d is disappointing, especially when considering how great a mark the same studio has made with their other recent blu-ray3d releases!!! Cars 2, Toy Story 3 and more are just outstanding in 3d! However, "FRIGHT NIGHT" is just a major 3d disappointment! Having viewed it first in theaters, and accepting even there 3d effects were only occasionally impactful, at least they were clearly visible. This blu-ray3d suffers the same fate as the first inferior blu-ray3d offerings. Everything about it is darker, duller, and less impressive than its 2d blu-ray counterpart. While a few 3d effects are occasionally impressive, they never achieve what they did theatrically and no part of the blu-ray3d release looks as bright, or detailed as the very impressive 2d blu-ray manages to look! There are some scenes on the blu-ray 3d version wherein it's virtually impossible to make out what's going on!!!

None of these problems exist on the 2d blu-ray! That said, the few very bright scenes employing 3d effects do look terrific and make the rest of the murky effects all the more saddening.

The bright scenes and the 2d blu-ray/dvd offer a stunning image, with perfectly rendered colors, impressive detail, regardless of the film's lighting and ranks up there with the best of comparable format releases.

DISNEY/BUENA VISTA has provided a DTS-HD MA 7.1 mix. From the opening credits through the end credits, this is a sensational mix! Bass is plentiful but never bombastic! Whether offering low-key ambient neighborhood effects, the deep bass thumping of a souped up night-club environment or explosions, this mix packs a whallop! Everything is perfectly balanced, and the film's score blends seamlessly with layers of effects and dialogue. A reference quality mix!

DISNEY/BUENA VISTA has included extras found on the blu-ray2d.

These include:

A very short extra built around Vincent's "FRIGHT NIGHT" show.

"HOW TO MAKE A FUNNY VAMPIRE MOVIE" GUIDE, provides cast and crew reflections on the film.

Deleted and extended scenes, as well as well as the amateur film, glimpsed within the film, are also included. All of these are presented in 1080p.
