Director Peter Jackson's "The Frighteners" never found the audience it deserved.  Thankfully, for fans, UNIVERSAL/PIONEER has given the film the "Signature Collection" treatment!  All the bells and whistles are here.   There's a great and possibly unprecedented "four hour" running commentary with Jackson, a director with a passion for filmmaking that reminds one of Scorsese.   There's also about 12 minutes of extra footage.  As Jackson explains, these moments didn't take or add anything to the film, which is why they weren't necessary.   But, it's great to see even more effect sequences.  The film runs over three sides.  "The Making of the Frighteners" takes over sides 4,5,6,7 & 8.   There are great interviews as well as "extensive" "behind-the-scenes" moments detailing how certain effects were achieved.   Add, bloopers, miniature special effects, and even more, making this one of the best "Signature Collection" offerings from Universal ever!  The picture shares the same master as the previous laser offering, with excellent contrast and detail, as well as the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound appears to be slightly more active than the dvd version.
