SRP $29.95 2.35:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 COLUMBIA TRISTAR

A Few Good Men-
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has re-released "A FEW GOOD MEN" as a Special Edition, and it's worth getting, even if already owning the previous version.
The military courtroom drama offers a little bit of everything,...great
performances, tight direction, tense drama and provocative scenes.
Aaron Sorkin, creator of "West Wing" as well as some terrific films,
adapted this from his own play.   Tom Cruise is excellent, but it's Jack
Nicholson who stands out, and whose lines will be and have been quoted for years!  Liberal or conservative, both ideologies will find something in this film to appreciate.  It never patronizes, choosing instead to intelligently show both points of view in relation to what measures constitute reasonable measures to protect America and offer military readiness.
While the previous release was quite good, the detail is superior now.
There's none of the oversaturation instances found previously, and
artifacting is less frequent as well.  The correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio
is presented with 16:9 enhancement. Contrast is outstanding, with deep
blacks and grays in many scenes.  Fleshtones appear natural throughout.  Colors are vibrant.
While the previous 2.0 soundmix was fine, the soundstage seemed more limited than we recalled from the theatrical showing.  A new Dolby digital 5.1 mix has been created, and while it's not full of surround effects, the front soundstage is much more creative.  The film's opening credit sequence, in which viewers can't help but to share a sense of awe at, lacked a lot of its punch with the 2.0 mix.  Now, the dolby digital 5.1 mix adds a sense of passion to the military drill unfolding onscreen.
Marc Shaiman's score isn't particularly outstanding, but the surrounds
help it come to life during pivotal moments.  Surrounds are restrained,
but at least they sound great when used.
As mentioned above, this is a real "SPECIAL EDITION."  "CODE OF CONDUCT" is a wonderful documentary, offering interviews with most of the cast.
Unfortunately, there's little information offered in terms of the actual
production.  Still, there are some great stories told here, and fans of
Nicholson are certain to be pleased with what's revealed about him
during the film's production.
The best thing about the supplements is the audio commentary with
Director Rob Reiner.  While it doesn't appear to be "screen-specific",
he's extremely affable and offers some insight into a film destined to
stand the test of time.
"A FEW GOOD MEN:FROM STAGE TO SCREEN" is a featurette/discussion with writer Sorkin and Director Reiner discussing the adaptation to the screen.  Our only complaint: It's so interesting, that it's aggravating to have it end so soon!  Theatrical trailers for "A FEW GOOD MEN", "JERRY MAGUIRE" and "THE JUROR" are included.
