One of the most critically acclaimed “teen-age” targeted series from the WB
network, “FELICITY”, has just had its entire first season released in a boxed
set format from BUENA VISTA. Although the show never achieved the “hit” status
it strived for, it did develop enough of a fan-base, and network advocates to
keep it running in spite of “so-so” ratings for an entire four seasons.
“Felicity” is the naïve, pretty, and cheery high school graduate, whom during
her graduation decides to take a giant leap of faith, and based upon nothing
more than a quick look from a guy she’s had a crush on, decides to change her
plans, and then follow him all the way to New York, and become a pre-med
student. Talking about throwing caution to the wind!!!
For someone so dumb, she still manages to draw us to her. Perhaps viewers
can
relate to the bad choices we’ve all made in our youth, and have learned from.
Thankfully, with continuing seasons, Felicity becomes a little older and wiser,
and the episodes don’t feel as contrived as some of these earlier ones do. The
love-triangle “sub-plot” becomes annoying very quickly after it begins.
BUENA VISTA has included all 22 episodes from the first season here, along
with
the “Pilot” episode.
The image is presented in their original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. While the
transfer is fine, color quality varies from “subdued” to perfect. Without any
explanation, some episodes appear somewhat bland or dull. However, there’s
always fine clarity, and fleshtones appear natural.
BUENA VISTA has included the original Dolby 2.0 sound mix, and while this is
a
dialogue-driven show, we’re a little disappointed that some of the songs, and
musical interludes lack the surround involvement which they deserve. Still,
there are some minor ambient effects, and dialogue is always intelligible and
free from distortion.
Surprisingly, BUENA VISTA has included two audio commentaries with this
release,
for the show’s “pilot” episode and season finale. Both of the show’s creators,
“J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves, offer enough enthusiasm and insight into the
show’s creation(originally a movie idea) and production insight, to make this
worth listening to for the show’s fans.
