Every so often, a great film that would otherwise be completely overlooked, finds its audience, one viewer at a time, as the word spreads. “FATHER OF INVENTION” is just such a film. Kevin Spacey stars as Robert, an inventor, or more accurately, a “re-inventor,” combining various available products, into something that appeals to tv viewers as something that they can’t believe they’ve done without! Unfortunately, one of the products he has successfully pitched, severely flawed, severs the fingers of enough users to land him in jail for a lengthy sentence.  Upon his release, Robert tries to reconnect with his daughter, Claire(a very impressive Camilla Belle), and, having no place to live, ends up as a roommate. While dealing with various ups and downs, he realizes a deep, entrenched need to use his skills to create a life for himself, worthy of the good in him and pays him and his daughter the honor they deserve. “FATHER OF INVENTION” works its magic, due to directorial restraint(when needed), fine acting, and really thoughtful writing. Regardless of a character’s specific challenges or background, every one of them feels true as written and presented here! “FATHER OF INVENTION” basks in the sunlight of honesty. Nothing about the film feels heavy-handed or manipulative. That’s a big task for any film these days when so many studios feel manipulation is the only way to make a profit! Perhaps that’s why this great, small film never saw the theatrical play or success it really should’ve had, but a treasure is a treasure, wherever or whenever it’s found!

STARZ/ANCHOR BAY has provided the correct 2.40:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray.  Colors are vibrant and showcases just how well-crafted this production is, in spite of its modest budget. Well designed, virtually every composition is impressive. Detail is excellent throughout, and while not every frame jumps off the screen with stunning depth, the image is rarely flat. Contrast is also remarkable, with near inky blacks. Starz/ANCHOR BAY has really given “FATHER OF INVENTION” a terrific presentation.

STARZ/ANCHOR BAY has provided a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix for this release.  While there are some ambient effects, surrounds are most utilized for the film’s music. Otherwise, this is a front speaker, center channel focused mix. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion. While not offering anything to be mistaken for fireworks, the mix is perfectly suitable in complimenting a wonderful, understated “near-masterpiece.”
