Mike Judge has created some hilarious work. Unfortunately, "EXTRACT," while having its moments of great promise, fails to deliver.
The promising opening, presents the increasingly beautiful Mila Kunis is introduced as Cindy, a pretty girl all-too-eager to utilize her appeal to steal, and Joel, the owner of a plant which manufactures an "extract" to make root beer. When Joel hires Cindy for a position in his plant, she's up to her plotting in record time. While all men are drawn to her, overlooking the signs she's up to no good, she focuses her attention on one poor fool, a line worker whom loses one of his testicles, on the job, due to her. Cindy convinces the poor sap to sue the company, just as it's in the process of a major buyout from General Mills. Knowing that Joel wouldn't want to have a lawsuit on his hands during the negotiations, she expects the company to pay big to make the claim go away, and for her new conquest, convinced of her love for him, to have no problem being suckered into giving his payout to her,...or she'll figure a way to get it regardless. Meanwhile, Joel is in a loveless marriage, completely unappreciated by his wife(Kristen Wiig), Suzie. He literally has to race the clock to get home in time before his wife maneuvers her last drawstring on sweatpants, if he's to have a chance at intimacy with her. Knowing the marriage and sex is gone, with the help of a bartender(Ben Affleck) a plan is devised for Joel to have sex without feeling guilty. A very not-too-bright, handsome young guy is hired to seduce Suzie.
To say any more, would unfairly take any surprises the film does have to offer for potential fans. But, what surprises are offered, never end up going to bold heights. "EXTRACT" is full of ingredients, but never achieves a big payoff to any of the various subplots taking place. It's aggravating to constantly think something unique is going to be right around the corner, but then,...nothing!
BUENA VISTA has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for this AVC-MPEG 4 encoded blu-ray. While colors are generally impressive, they're never vibrant. Contrast is only average, with some darker scenes failing to provide the stellar detail found on many other BV blu-ray releases. While the image is never swallowed up by black, it's never overly impressive either. Detail in brighter scenes, is generally pleasing, but most of the image lacks the improvement in depth over dvd, one expects. It's decent, but nothing that will make "EXTRACT" one to show off the potential of blu-ray.
BUENA VISTA has provided a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. Most of the film is center channel focused. While surrounds kick in occasionally, they're underutilized. Fidelity is decent, but the lack of bass presence or dynamic flourishes is disappointing.
BUENA VISTA has included a few extras, including a behind-the-scenes featurette, extended scenes and a deleted scene.
