SRP $19.98 1.77:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL/DTS 5.1 ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT

ANCHOR BAY has released Sam Raimi’s “EVIL DEAD” trilogy as separate releases over the years in different variations.  Our favorite version of “EVIL DEAD 2” is the newest one with a THX-approved transfer from ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT.

For those who never saw the original “EVIL DEAD” film, there’s a brief summary of events that transpired in that film, all with newly filmed footage.  Once the audience is brought up to date, we view Ash(Bruce Campbell) leaving the cabin after fighting off demons from the night before.  Unfortunately, as he begins to leave, he’s attacked y by a mysterious force.  Before the sinister force is able to complete its possession of him, it’s chased away by the sun, leaving Ash alone to rest during the day, for he’ll need all his strength to fight off the demons with the upcoming night.

Adding to the mix is the daughter of the cabin’s owner, arriving with her friend from an expedition, as well as some guides they hire to bring them to the cabin.  These extra characters provide even more perils for Ash to try overcoming.

The special effects are impressive, and the production design is often dazzling to watch.  It’s surprising to see such effective effects on a limited budget.

“EVIL DEAD 2” is certainly not for everyone.  Some will not appreciate Raimi’s blend of horror and comedy, but we enjoy the over-the-top mixture.

ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT has provided an outstanding transfer for this release.  The original 1.85:1 aspect ratio is intact with 16:9 enhancement.  The “THX” certification process has certainly cleaned up the image.  None of the grain problems affecting the earlier release are here.  The color values are more solid as well, although it appears Raimi wanted a blue-ish look to night scenes for added impact.  There’s excellent contrast and detail in the numerous dark scenes.

ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix as well as a new Dolby 2.0 mix for this release.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 offering is a huge improvement over the previous release.  The surrounds add an eerie and effective mood to the already scary scenes.  While fidelity is limited at times, the bass and creativity of the effects more than make up for it.  The Dolby 2.0 mix is impressive for those not lucky enough to have a 5.1 receiver, but the Dolby Digital offers superior clarity and directional effects.

There are some excellent supplements included on this release.  An audio commentary with Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Scott Spiegel and the makeup artist, is included.  It’s an outstanding commentary! Not only does it deliver a great deal of information in regards to the film’s production, but these guys are hilarious! Their humorous slams against one another makes this one of the funniest commentaries we’ve ever heard.

A lengthy featurette, “THE GORE, THE MERRIER” offers behind-the-scenes footage, providing great insight into the film’s special effects.

There is also a still gallery with plenty of great images from the film’s production.  The film’s theatrical trailer as well as a THX Optimode program, is also included.
