"Dr. Strangelove or:How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the
Bomb" is one of the greatest films ever made, and certainly one of the
funniest! It's timeless! Just as with a great "Simpsons"
episode, it doesn't matter how many times you've seen it and know all the jokes,
they're still funny! Sterling Hayden portrays General Jack D. Ripper, the head
of the Strategic Air Command. He's nuts! This isn't because he
believes the Soviets are out to destroy America,. they were! But, because
of the methods he believes they were utilizing! He decides to call for an
aggressive attack on the Soviet Union, issuing orders for our bombers to fly
past the "failsafe" point! He also seals his base, and orders
his troops to fight anyone attempting to enter!
Peter Sellers plays several characters here, and "each" of them is
worthy of Academy Award! As Captain Lionel Mandrake, he's given the
responsibility of trying to convince Ripper that he's got to stop this action.
When Hayden can no longer do anything to reverse things, Mandrake must alert
others!
When Sellers portrays President Merkin Muffley, one of the funniest bits of
dialogue ensues. It's a brief, but fall-down funny scene wherein the
President is trying to minimize the damage in relations with the Soviet
President while alerting him to the crisis at hand. It's reminiscent of
Neil Simon or Mel Brooks dialogue at its best! For those of you who may
not know who Slim Pickens is, you won't forget after seeing this film! He
is also responsible for one of the funniest and most visually startling moments
in film history. His character is Major T.J. King Kong, leading a crew on
their mission to drop the "bomb." There are just so many great
things and scenes in this film that it's impossible to do them justice with mere
description! If you haven't seen this film, you must! If you have seen it,
this is a dvd worth having in your collection!
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided what appears to be the same transfer as previously
offered in the WARNER BROS. "KUBRICK" collection. Because the
theatrical transfer varied in ratios, this "may" explain why this
transfer isn't letterboxed or enhanced for 16:9 viewing. Even without 16:9
enhancement, the transfer is stunning. The film is black&white and
because of this, high-quality "contrast" is crucial. The blacks
and grays are deep and in spite of some signs of age, this transfer looks
fantastic!
The Dolby 2.0 monaural track is also impressive. Dialogue is always
intelligible and free of distortion.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has loaded this release with supplements! To begin with,
there's a great documentary, "THE ART OF STANLEY KUBRICK from SHORT FILMS
TO STRANGELOVE." This is basically a biographical look at the
director, tracing his life. Another featurette, "INSIDE THE MAKING OF
DR. STRANGELOVE", is a collection of interviews, stills and other nostalgic
tidbits providing a detailed look into the film's production. There is
also a special feature offering "split-screen" interviews of Peter
Sellers and George C. Scott. The "ORIGINAL ADVERTISING GALLERY"
offers numerous
one-sheets, lobby cards, and other promotional materials. There are also
some trailers included in this release, and all of them are fullscreen.
