MGM/FOX has released one of Brian DePalma's genuine classics, "DRESSED TO KILL," on blu-ray. While Hitchcock's influence on DePalma has always been evident, it's even more prominent this time out! However, being DePalma, and being that what is allowable on screen had changed drastically by the time of this 1980 film, there's no shortage of titillation, even if a body double is used for Ms. Angie Dickinson's shower scene.
Blending psycho-babble with a sensual suspense thriller, "DRESSED TO KILL" marks some bold cinematic steps for DePalma. Without giving away too much and hurting the film's surprises, the director throws some curve balls at the audience, soon after the film has started. Kate(Dickinson)is in a less than fulfilling marriage and seeking solace via her psychologist, Dr. Eliott(Michael Caine). While at a museum, Kate catches the eye of a stranger, and a brief cat-and-mouse theme ensues, until the two end up back at the stranger's place for a sexual dalliance. However, upon rushing from her illicit affair, Kate stumbles onto some real shocking circumstances, leading to a multi-layered plot and the assembling of a unique crime-busting team(can't say too much without ruining it). "DRESSED TO KILL" isn't perfect, but even 31 years later, it's still a lot of fun!
Nancy Allen, is quite good in her role here, showcasing a strong performance and sensuality, without succumbing to camp. Tight direction, fine acting, and strong cinematic stylization make "DRESSED TO KILL" a title worthy of any serious film collection.
MGM/FOX has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray. Colors aren't particularly vibrant, save for a few instances. However, they appear natural throughout, as do fleshtones. Detail is impressive, and notably so in close-ups. Contrast, while imperfect due to inconsistent black levels, manages to rank higher than most catalogue releases. Grain is always present, but only occasionally intrusive. It's a good transfer, especially for a catalogue title. While not as stunning as some newer releases, it's pretty impressive.
MGM/FOX has provided a DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix. This lossy mix has been completely reconfigured, for the better! The effects enhancements really create an immersive atmosphere, without ever feeling manufactured. Instead, effects are logically utilized to compliment the cinematic effects on display. This is one of those few occasions wherein a remanufactured mix actually seems to improve upon the original. Of course, the fidelity offered here, also serves to compliment another fantastic score by the great Pino Donaggio as well! BRAVO!!!!
A variety of extras, including a great documentary, comparison of R-rated, network and unrated versions of the shower scene and more, are included. However, only the trailer is offered in HD.
