Director Charles Martin Smith is likely more well known for his acting roles than for being behind the camera, but his latest, "DOLPHIN TALE," may finally change that. "DOLPHIN TALE" doesn't have a specific stamp that identifies it as being from Smith, as Spielberg's films all do, but that's actually a blessing. From beginning to end, "DOLPHIN TALE" does what good films are supposed to do, "captivate!"
Captivating is no small feat when the viewer is all too familiar with the animal in peril, struggling to survive-plot. Based on a true story, when a dolphin gets caught in a crap trap near the Florida coast, losing its tail in the process and depending entirely upon the kindness of strangers. Sure, the actual story lacks the fanciful characters created within the script, but the fact that these characters are played by the likes of the always beautiful Ashley Judd, unforgettable Morgan Freeman and others, more than makes up for the predictable story arcs, as they unfold.
In the script, a young boy, "Sawyer," has to convince the adults around him to see beyond the limitations they believe exist for the dolphin's survival. Of course, "Sawyer's" child innocence ends up helping most of them find the faith and inspiration needed to not just help a dolphin but better their own lives as well. Sentimental? Sure, but it's virtually impossible to not be won over by "DOLPHIN TALE," before the end credits begin. For this reviewer, the choking up part began about 45 minutes into it.
WARNER BROS has provided the correct 1.78:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray. Colors are incredibly vibrant from the start, and the way in which they help the stunning waters come to life, is breath-taking! Detail is also flawless! That's right, flawless! While some CG effects work better than others, the imagery at hand is stunning throughout. Inky blacks retain great depth, regardless of lighting. A blu-ray3d release is also available, and after being blown away by the image offered in 2D, it's making the 3D version even more tempting to purchase for this reviewer.
WARNER BROS has provided a DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix. Although most of the mix is focused on the front speakers, occasional ambient effects for waves and natural environmental effects, are terrific. Being a dialogue-heavy film, voices are perfectly balanced with a terrific score. It's not an aggressive mix, but the lack of heavy surround effects doesn't diminish its' overall impact at all.
In addition to a dvd and Ultra-Violet streaming option, a number of extras are sure to please fans.
A great featurette, "WINTER'S INSPIRATION," offers a look at the true story and people behind her inspiring recovery.
Other featurettes vary from as short as 2 minutes to 13 minutes and are all in HD.
"DOLPHIN TALE" is easy to recommend as an addition to every family's blu-ray collection!
