The DVD transfer of "Deep Impact" is generally on par in quality with the laserdisc version.  One exception of note involves the final tidal wave sequence which appears sharper on the laserdisc.  However, the fleshtones, contrast and general depth of image are superior on DVD.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound is equivalent to the excellent sound mix offered on laser.  The biggest advantage is being able to view the entire film on one side, whereas the laserdisc takes up three sides.

All of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan films are now available on laser and dvd with Dolby Digital 5.1 formatting.  Our favorite transfer of them all is the "Patriot Games" dvd!  It has the greatest clarity, contrast and fleshtone consistancy of them all.  It's also the only dvd wherein the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix appears to have greater clarity than the laser.  The lighting scheme to this film changes drastically and in every scene there's perfection.  Whether dealing with flames from an explosion or  the waves of an ocean boat chase, there's exceptional detail in every frame. 

Director/writer Peter Howitt has done a remarkable job in telling this tale in as visually a compelling way as he's done here.  The story follows Gwyneth Paltrow as a London Publicist who after having been just fired wanders home, and in an instant, we begin to glimpse how her life would be altered if she missed the "sliding doors" to the subway by a split second.  This device follows her character in two cocurrent story lines, and more importantly in a comprehensible manner!  The pacing is excellent and Howitt gives the film a pleasant and lively atmosphere.  The detail on the dvd is exceptional with flawless clarity and color values.  The 1.85:1 framing is intact and adds to the well chosen compositions.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is one of the film's greatest benefits.  Comparing it to the standard pro-logic offered on laserdisc, highlights the excellent detail, and directional effects present throughout the film.
