PARAMOUNT HOME ENTERTAINMENT has released the long awaited Cronenberg film, THE DEAD ZONE. Many fans of Stephen King consider this to be the best film adaptation of any of his novels. While this reviewer still thinks "Shawshank Redemption" , even with major changes from the novella from which it was based upon, is the best adaptation of his works, THE DEAD ZONE" is certainly Cronenberg's best film. It also doesn't hurt to have such a stellar cast. Christopher Walken is terrific in the lead, a man given the power of seeing the future after coming out of a five year coma. During a chance encounter with a senatorial candidate, Walken sees the "real" sinister goals of the politician, simply by shaking his hand. This is only one of many interesting subplots that encompass the clever script. While Walken is great, one can't overlook the power of the supporting cast. Tom Skerrit, Herbert Lom, and many other great actors make this a "classy" production!
PARAMOUNT HOME ENTERTAINMENT has gone all out with this transfer. The
1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio is intact with 16:9 enhancement. The image
is extremely sharp with no oversaturation or artifacts. Fleshtones are natural
looking, and the contrast is sharp, with minimal grain.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix is effective, but not extremely
aggressive. The rear speakers are used mostly to enhance the musical
score.
