COLUMBIA TRISTAR has released "CRUEL INTENTIONS 2" on dvd.  Originally slated as a two-hour pilot for a tv series based on the hit film, "CRUEL INTENTIONS" and called "MANCHESTER PREP", the show was so horribly received before airing that it was cancelled immediately.  Thankfully, COLUMBIA TRISTAR and the film's director/writer Roger Kumble, have assembled the film
in a way that has to be more provocative than in its original format, and
while it's not as entertaining as the film, it's still great fun!
Robin Dunne assumes the role played by Ryan Philipe, as Sebastian.  The beautiful, but aging Mimi Rogers plays his stepmom and Amy Adams plays his promiscuous sister, Kathryn.  The show follows the original film pretty closely, although due to a more modest budget, it feels more like a "Red Shoes Diary" episode than a film.  Also, there's not the victim/target of a contest as there was in the film, offering a catalyst of sorts for their actions.  The sexuality has been turned up more than in the original film, but this actually hurts it, as there's little room for the various subtleties and nuances that made that film so effective as a guilty pleasure.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented the film with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio and 16:9 enhancement.  The color values are solid with vibrant hues, and no oversaturation.  The image is extremely sharp in spite of some grain.   The contrast is fine, although the blacks and grays aren't as deep as on many other COLUMBIA TRISTAR dvd releases.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix is more restrained than we'd hoped for. While we had problems with the sound mix to the film as well, that one at least offered some discrete effects.  There are very few directional effects here.  The musical score, which was extremely potent on the film's soundtrack, is something of a lackluster here, offering less oomph, even though some of the music is the same!  Dialogue is always intelligible and free of distortion.  There are several trailers offered, including "GIRL," "CENTER STAGE", "CRUEL INTENTIONS", and "CRUEL INTENTIONS 2".
