SRP $29.99 1.85:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 BUENA VISTA

The Crow:Special Edition-

The tragic and untimely death that befell Brandon Lee on the set of "The Crow" probably had a lot to do with the film achieving a cult following, but one can't dismiss the creative vision of director Alex Proyas or Lee's onscreen presence.

Lee plays an aspiring guitarist whom is killed with his wife during a
robbery.  For reasons, non too clear, he is able to return to the world
in order to seek revenge on the killers.   There's a certain morbid
atmosphere that surrounds not only the film, but also its characters,
including the hero, making the film really uncomfortable at times.
Still, the film's production design, as well as other factors, helps
compensate for the film's off-putting environment.

BUENA VISTA has really improved on the film's image since the previous dvd release.  This one's been enhanced for 16:9 viewing, allowing for a much more defined image.  While there is still some grain present, the contrast is better this time out, and the color values, while subdued at times, are still more vibrant than in the previous version.

The best improvement offered in this version is the offering of both
"DTS" and "Dolby Digital" 5.1 sound.  The soundmix for both versions is extremely aggressive, offering a multitude of surround effects.  The
dialogue is well focused and free of distortion.  The use of .1 LFE is
also effective, but underused for the most part!  Both versions sound
terrific, but the edge definitely goes to the DTS version, due to the
"cleaner" sound of the effects as well as its better bass.

Writer John Shirley and producer Jeff Most provide an audio commentary as an option along with the film on the first disc of this 2 disc release.  While the commentary isn't always captivating, as there are long lulls in the conversation at times, there's a great deal of
production information covered here.  Shirley also explores the
challenges in adapting the script from a comic book.

There are assorted supplements offered on the 2nd disc, including:

An Extended Sequence segment-  Three sequences are offered here.  While their extensions are worth viewing for any fan of the film, the extra footage adds nothing to the scenes and it's easy to see why they were shortened.

A Making of segment-  This is a documentary exploring the film's comic
book origins and the variations between the source material and finished product.

A Deleted Scenes Montage- This is a section consisting of a montage,
running five minutes, and offering bits of deleted material, but none of
it stands out as exciting or necessary.

An Original Poster Concepts segment-  This section offers posters
created for the film.  Again, while fans may appreciate this, it's not
going to impress casual viewers.
A Profile of James O'Barr segment-  This section offers an interview
with the creator of the comic book.  While it focuses on the source
material, with various images of his work edited in, it also captures
elements of his past that helped him create the story.  It's a
fascinating documentary.

A Storyboard segment- This offers storyboards for specific scenes, and
is entertaining by itself!
