01619 SRP $24.98 2.35:1 Full Frame COLUMBIA TRISTAR DOLBY SURROUND

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has given John Carpenter's classic, "Christine" an incredible transfer!  Carpenter really proves he can capture youth and all the angst of teen rivalry(as he also did in his tv version of "Elvis") here!   Essentially a dark movie, even the darkest nighttime sequences have perfect clarity, thanks to the 16:9 enhancement given here.  The blacks and grays are perfectly distinguishable, and the 2.35:1 aspect ratio intact.  The cropped side is useless, though the clarity's not bad there either.  The dolby surround sound is filled with directional effects and the musical score rocks, especially "Bad to the Bone"!

Speaking of "rocking"(see above), COLUMBIA TRISTAR has gone all out for the transfer of an essentially unknown comedy  from director Brian Gibson.  Similar at times to what Reiner achieved with "Spinal Tap", "Still Crazy" is a mock documentary/comedy about a '70s rock group reuniting 20 years later.  Stephen Rea is spectacular, but then the whole cast is great.

The dvd transfer has a few brief moments wherein the clarity is less than par due to some oversaturation, but the rest of the transfer looks marvelous, with pristine color values.  The dolby digital 5.1 soundtrack will shake your room during the musical numbers and entertain you the rest of the time with directional effects for even the slightest nuances in atmosphere changes.

The only film in which the Gene Wilder,Richar Pryor duo really worked, "Stir Crazy" is here!!!  This comedy classic, like "The Jerk", still holds up(Check out chapter 9 for Wilder's incredible, "WE BAD" sequence")well after all these years.  The script by playwright Bruce Jay Friedman helps, but there's more to it than that, it's a perfect collaboration and vision from everyone involved.  Director Sidney Poitier is carefully restrained here, and the film works well because of this.  The original film stock appears a little dated, but the transfer is fine, with accurate fleshtones and clarity.  The mono sound is unremarkable.

Writer/director Sally Potter creates an unforgettable world in "Orlando", the tale of an English nobleman, exploring the war between the sexes over vast periods in time.  This film is said to have inspired the music video by Paula Cole.  While confusing at times, it's never dull, and the performances, including Billy Zane's and Tilda Swinton's are excellent.

More impressive is the costume and production design,  which is perfectly captured in this flawless transfer.  Every thread of the ever-flowing garments appear to be detailed here.  The COLUMBIA TRISTAR transfer offers 16:9 enhancement.  We wish all the studios took note of what COLUMBIA TRISTAR is doing with their standard releases.   IF THEY' RE PROFITING FROM THIS EXTRA DETAIL,  OTHER STUDIOS WILL ALSO PROFIT, JUST GIVE THE DVD FANS WHAT THEY WANT!!!!!
