There's nothing wrong with the fact that "CHILLERAMA" is a low budget horror anthology. There have been plenty of low-budget horror films that are great fun, generations after first released. However, "CHILLERAMA," just lacks the creativity that allows the viewer to become fully engaged, instead, finding themselves looking everywhere but within the story at hand for something to keep their attention, and thus, all of the other production limitations take front-place. The opening sequence, wherein a bitter husband, atop the broken-in grave of his wife, finds himself bitten in the privates by her corpse, doesn't offer anything new to the genre, but serves as a good indicator as to the level of ingenuity in which the individual horror stories will bask in.
"Wadzilla" attempts(miserabIy) to pay homage to '50s sci-fi films, only this time it's not giant ants(THEM) but a giant sperm on the loose! Miles, a nerd-type, seeks help for a low sperm count from a physician. Given a medication intended to make stronger sperm to make up for a lack of quantity, whenever Miles is turned on, great pain follows. On a blind-date, seeking relief in a bath-room, Miles' sperm breaks out, growing to godzilla-like proportions and terrorizing the city. While there are a couple of pretty girls in the film, even they can't hold one's interest during the film's short duration. The effects are just awful by any standard, and the comedy is equally unimpressive. A really bad comedy.
"I Was a Teenage Wearbear" has a gay actor playing "Micky," a young guy having a hard time choosing between a sweet girl, "Peggy Lou," and "Talon," a biker. While trying to pay homage to '60s beach movies, it lacks any of the wit or fun of "Gidget," let alone any of the "Beach Blanket Bingo" films. While there's an attempt at an anti-gaybashing message, it gets lost within a boring, dumb film. Just awful!
"The Diary of Anne Frankenstein," while not exactly "good," is still less bad than the rest of the shorts offered here. This black&white satire, suggests the Frank family was actually sought after for information to create a super-army from the dead. The "Frank's" real name, "Frankenstein!" Not a whole lot of cleverness, obviously, but this is still brilliant to the other offerings, and at least the actor playing Hitler and Braun, offer a couple of mild laughs.
"Deathication" is the worst of what's offered, and thankfully, the shortest. A sort of homage to the worst of John Water's films, there's nothing about the film redeemable.
Having loved horror film anthologies as a young tv viewer(They were popular in the '70s), this reviewer was hopeful that "CHILLERAMA," allegedly directed by some of the better horror film directors from current cinema, would have some entertainment value. Sadly, this isn't the case, and there's just nothing worthwhile about it. Luckilly, IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT does have plenty of other great, reasonably priced blu-ray releases, worth viewing and purchasing at the time of this release and coming up soon.
The proper 1.78:1 aspect ratio is used for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p release. The stylized look of the varying short films, along with the bridging drive-in segment, make for varying quality of image. Colors are occasionally pushed to extremes, but they are generally well rendered. Detail is consistently impressive, and no artifacts are present. A good looking transfer for a horrible film.
IMAGE offers a DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix for this release. The only real immersion of sound comes with the drive-in "ZOM-B-MOVIE" bridging the films. And, to be fair, at least in terms of sound mixing, there's some impressive creativity at hand. Unfortunately, the sound-mixers/designers weren't apparently involved with the writing. The actual films within the anthology offer occasional surround involvement, but effects are sparse and never really that impressive.
For those who may actually enjoy "CHILLERAMA," and many have due to convention screening reports, IMAGE has loaded this release with plenty of extras including commentaries, deleted scenes and more. Even more impressive, the extras are offered in full HD. This reviewer couldn't force himself to check out the extras for a film that was found so tough to sit through, however.
