Charlies Angels-
COLUMBIA TRISTAR's Special Edition of "CHARLIES ANGELS" is certainly
going to please many viewers. Although the film is uneven at times, it's
also quite fun. Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz star in this
state-of-art, special-effects filled version of the hit t.v show. Of
course Bill Murray is also on hand as the Angels' and Charlies' go-between,
Bosley.
The film's plot, offering Tim Currey as a villain, is plain out stupid! He
plays a software mogul trying to rule the world, and the Angels must
infiltrate his James Bond-like facility to get their hands on information to
thwart his objective. While the plot is awful and filled with holes, the
actors all seem to be having a grand time in every scene, and the mood,
inevitably transcends to the viewer. "CHARLIES ANGELS" is a
stupid, but ultimately, "fun" film! It also moves along at a
rapid pace, making it entertaining even on repeated viewings.
There are some great fight sequences, similar to what was achieved in "The
Matrix" and other visually martial-arts sequences.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented the film in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio,
with 16:9 enhancement. There's incredible detail in every scene. Colors
are extremely sharp and vibrant, but with minimal oversaturation! Contrast
is outstanding too! The blacks are solid and variations between the blacks
and grays are impressive. In short, this is a "stunning"
transfer!
The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is excellent. The mix is aggressive, with
an abundance of directional and atmospheric effects. Many scenes offer
creative split activity and the dialogue is always intelligible, well focused
and free of distortion, in spite of multiple layers of effects. The .1 LFE
track is effective, but surprisingly underused.
The film's director, "McG" offers audio commentary along with the
cinematographer. Both provide a great deal of information relating to the
films production and as to how certain shots were accomplished, and the director
is extremely animated throughout, making this one of the more entertaining
commentaries to come along in quite a while.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has also gone all out to provide extensive supplements for this
"Special Edition"! "GETTING G'D UP" is basically a
featurette "homage" to the film's director, offering behind-the-scenes
praise for "McG".
"THE MASTER AND THE ANGELS" is a featurette exploring the various
fight scenes from the film, focusing on the talents of Martial Arts Expert,
Cheung-Yan Yuen, and how he trained the actresses to look as effective as they
do here!
"WELCOME TO ANGEL WORLD" explores the "mise-en-scene" of
"Charlie's Angels" and how it was achieved. The film's
production designer and art director are on hand in this featurette, offering
their insight.
"ANGELIC ATTIRE:DRESSING CAMERON,DREW AND LUCY", explores the various
costumes of the film's stars, and while Bill Murray isn't named in the title of
the segment, a lot of this featurette's brief running time, is devoted to him!
"ANGELIC EFFECTS" explores just how some of the film's spectacular
effects were achieved via interviews with effects surpervisors. But, most
importantly, we get to examine various sets and the opening action sequence down
to the smallest detail!
"WIRED ANGELS" allows the audience a chance to see one of the film's
fight sequences in "rough" form, allowing us to see how the scene
looks "before" the effects specialists do their job.
Of course, there are also "deleted and extended scenes"! McG is
on hand prior to each scene, offering his explanation for their excision.
For
anyone not liking the actual film, they'll be even more grateful after
seeing the cut scene of the Angels in a men's room, goofing around. It's
really a horrible scene, and McG should be criticized for even filming it,
but at least he was smart enough to cut it in the end!All of these scenes
are presented in their 2.35:1 aspect ratio, but without 16:9 enhancement.
Another offering is the "OUTTAKES AND BLOOPERS" segment. This is
really nothing more than the same stuff offered during the film's closing
credit, albeit without the credits!
Since the film's soundtrack became huge due to a hit song from the group
"Destiny's Child", it's a welcome pleasure to view the video to
"Independent Women Part 1", although it's disappointing that it's only
offered in 2.0 stereo, and not Dolby Digital 5.1. There are also seven
theatrical trailers included! With the exception of "CROUCHING TIGER,
HIDDEN DRAGON" and "MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING", all are with 16:9
enhancment and Dolby Digital 5.1
sound. Most impressive of all is the fact that COLUMBIA TRISTAR is finally
offering trailers for "upcoming" theatrical releases, including
"THE ADVENTURES OF JOE DIRT" which looks hilarious!
