CABLE GUY

Although "The Cable Guy" was completeley dismissed by critics and audiences alike, this reviewer found it to be hilarious at times, as well as poignant. Most Carrey fans were probably dismayed at seeing him in such a dark comedy. Carrey plays a cable installer desperately in need of a friend. When he meets new cable t.v. client Matthew Broderick, he refuses to be anything but attached at the hip to him. A great deal of the humor is witty, credit director Ben Stiller, and the masses just may not get it! Alternating between bizarre and uproarious, it finds its own unique style. The porno password sequence is one of the funniest moments in recent film history. As we mentioned, not only is the comedy dark, but often, so is the picture. Because of this fact, it's comforting to see that DVD technology has assured that carefully encoded material can look as good as the picture does here. The film is offered in both 2.35:1 & P&S versions on alternate sides, but so much is lost in pan&scan from Stiller's carefully designed humor that it would be a real crime to watch anything but the letterboxed version. The dolby digital(5.1) is first-rate with an abundance of sound effects.
