BUENA VISTA HOME ENTERTAINMENT deserves a lot of credit for giving such high
quality treatment to their lesser known films. "BUTTERFLY" is a
perfect example. The story concerns a young boy and his relationship with
a teacher. Set in the '30s, with the Spanish Civil War as its backdrop,
"BUTTERFLY" does a fine job at conveying the personal toll that
politics had on so many innocent people. Focusing more on characters than
plot, the film
ultimately achieves its goal in depicting the tragedy of war, in spite of a
few sluggish, inconsequential scenes. The film is extremely well acted,
and beautiful to look at, from start-to-finish.
The film's original 2.35:1 aspect ratio is intact and enhanced for 16:9
viewing. The colors are solid and free of oversaturation. Fleshtones
appear natural. Unfortunately, there is some minor pixelation present, but
overall the image is sharp. Contrast is fine, with deep blacks and grays.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundmix is restrained, but effective. Because this is a
dialogue-driven film, the lack of an aggressive soundmix is acceptable. All
dialogue is focused through the center channel. While there are some
surround effects, they're atmospheric in nature.
