One of
the lower budgeted sci-fi films of the ‘70s to be released recently “BUG” is
actually better than its title or cast suggests. Bradford Dillman stars as an
Entomologist whose attachment to bugs goes over-the-top after his wife is burned
to death, coinciding with an earthquake that unleashes killer cockroaches
capable of starting fires by rubbing their legs together!
The
“why” to what Dillman does, is never answered, but when Dillman elects to
cross-breed this species with the Normal cockroach, the results are devastating.
The film
works in spite of its premise, and remains effectively engaging up until a
ridiculous finale.
The film
is presented with its correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio and 16:9 enhancement.
After a rough start, the monaural sound becomes adequate. Fidelity is
consistently limited, however dialogue is generally intelligible and without
distortion.
